UNISEX Unfinished Kimono Tapestry
It's a ready-made men's kimono and nagajuban (undergarment) for a celebratory shrine visit (omiyamairi), with the kimono's outer layer crafted from double-layered silk fabric and hand-dyed.
Many people tend to associate 'tegaki' (hand-drawn) with the notion of painting the pattern directly with a brush, but in reality, it refers to the process of outlining the pattern with indigo-dyed starch paste applied by hand. Traditional handcrafted items are not necessarily 'tegaki'; a method called 'tegoshi' is more common, involving the use of stencils for paste application.
This kimono was crafted during the Showa era, as a single-layer garment, and it features the old-fashioned 'ishimochi' finishing technique (a method of incorporating hand-painted family crests where the crest area remains un-dyed).
In recent times, most kimono are dyed using printers, making the labor-intensive 'ishimochi' style rarer.
Though unused, this is a vintage item, so please be aware of the possibility of slight color variations or stains when making a purchase.
